SHS MAP Students Take Top Honors At 5th Annual SI Doc Fest

MAP students Stephen Ruff (L) and Michael Hoffman (R) accept the $10,000 grand prize award in the 5th annual SI Doc Fest for their film "My New Red Shoes"

Saratoga High School MAP students Stephen Ruff and Michael Hoffman took the top prize at last Saturday's fifth annual SI Doc Fest with their film "My New Red Shoes," which focuses on the non-profit of the same name whose mission is to provide new clothing and shoes to homeless and low-income Bay Area children. The students were presented with a check for $10,000 to be divided between themselves, their non-profit, and SHS's MAP.

MAP students Ankita Chadha, Haley Wong, and Stephanie Payne placed as semi-finalists with their film "Just One Wish," highlighting the work of the Make a Wish Foundation. They were awarded $300 for their non-profit.

Additionally, Saratoga High School was honored with the Terry McElhatton award for the most entries from a single school and received $1500.

Now in its fifth year of operation, the SI Doc Fest encourages student filmmakers in the greater Bay Area to explore social issues by creating short documentary films about individuals or non-profit organizations that are making a difference in the community. It is a unique contest through which both the students and their subjects benefit. Students from twelve counties participated in this year's contest.

Congratulations to our SHS MAP students and teachers!

Board Positions Coming Open: We Need Your Help!

The inaugural booster board members are reaching the end of their terms and we are actively seeking committed volunteers to take over several positions so we can keep the support for this outstanding program going strong.

If you would like to help MAP continue to grow and thrive, and help our students continue to gain the kind of knowledge and experience that will give them an advantage in an increasingly competitive world, consider taking on one of the available board positions. If you have applicable skills or knowledge, that’s a plus, but enthusiasm and dedication are the only real requirements.

Take a look at the list of available positions and please contact Katie Shinnick katieoshinnick@comcast.net if you have questions, or are interested in taking on a role.

President: responsible for creating monthly agenda and facilitates regular and special meetings. Stays familiar with the status of all committee work and may call emergency meeting of the Board and to appoint special committees when necessary. Also has the power to approve bills for payment and can write and sign checks.

VP Elect/Parliamentarian: basically president in training, this job requires very little time in 2012/2013, but would take over the position of President in 2014/2015, and would recruit new positions when necessary. Attendance at most board meetings is crucial.

Treasurer: accepts and deposits checks at bank, preparation of a Quicken report of income and expenses for each meeting, preparation/filing of taxes at end of Fiscal Year (June 2013).

VP of Communications:  responsible for all correspondence and promotional materials, maintains MAP Booster website and Facebook page, adding new pages if needed and updating calendar and announcements monthly. Adds photos to website and maintains on-line tools.

Fundraising Coordinator:
leads the January Event in the McAfee and the Donation Drawing at SMASH’N. The position would have support from the VP of Communication who would create any necessary promotional materials and help with logistics. This role could use fresh creative ideas for increasing funds!

Events Coordinator:  responsible for coordinating all MAP Booster events (Speaker Series, SMASH'N, etc.). The position works closely with the VP of Communications and the Fundraising Coordinator. Communicates with and helps recruit guest speakers, works with Communications VP on promotional materials, PTSO Liaison on announcements, and McAfee Center Manager with theater logistics.

Corporate Matching/Grants Coordinator:
follows-up on leads and researches corporate matching and grant opportunities.

We also welcome any inquiries at our next Booster meeting on Tuesday, May 8th in room 004 at noon.

We look forward to hearing from you!

WHERE DO THE FUNDS GO?

The MAP Boosters organization is responsible for raising $50K annually to support our program, of which, we’ve raised about 40% to date. About half of these funds are used to support personnel, while the other half goes toward the purchase of equipment, as well as technology and software updates necessary to keep our program current. Your participation as a Booster is critical in order to continue to maintain and expand this unique and valuable program, as funding from district and state comes under increasing pressure and, in some cases, is eliminated.

With outstanding support from our parent community, the MAP program continues to create exceptional opportunities for students’ educational growth and enrichment.

Thanks for your support!
